The Paintings of Mary McClelland

Bones

No single theme is more ubiquitous in all of Mary's paintings than bones.  Mary had a unique vision in the way she saw and painted the inner structure of animals as shining through their outer coverings, and bones played a huge part in this vision.  Not only did she paint animals with bones showing through, but she also did a number of paintings of skulls and skeletons directly.  She had a large bone collection in her studio, and loved to spend time in natural history museums with animal skeletons on display, from dinosaurs to mice.
